The draft for Niagara County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan is available online for public review at http://www.niagaracounty.com/fire/Home.aspx. Comments will be accepted until November 25. The comment form is available for downloading from this link, as well. Niagara County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan Update is prepared for the public review period. Prior to this review period, there was a session held at the Public Safety Training Facility, 5574 Niagara St. Ext. in Lockport. Witt O’Brien’s representatives reviewed the layout of the plan and highlighted the major points and/or findings. The public is invited to comment on the draft plan.

Goat Chip Bingo big success at July 4th celebration
Goat Chip Bingo took place at the July 4th celebration at the Royalton Ravine. Goat Chip Bingo is sponsored by the RHBPA and is one of their major fundraisers and is a lot of fun. Goats are let loose on a numbered grid. Tickets with corresponding numbers are sold. At a designated time, the square that the designated goat pooped on was the winner. Two random drawings were also held for smaller cash prizes after the “drop” took place. The next event sponsored by the RHBPA is Music in Park that features food, free concerts, chocolate by Barker Chocolate Box, wine tastings by local wineries and a farmers market by Schwab’s Farm Market. Each year the Village of Middleport holds some fun and meaningful celebrations to commemorate Memorial Day in the Village that include a parade, two ceremonies and the Duck Derby on the canal. Festivities in the Village took place on Monday, May 26. The parade was at noon, followed by the Veterans and Fire Company Memorial Ceremonies on Park Ave. Immediately following that ceremony, ducks were off in the canal at the Middleport Duck Derby. Middleport’s Community Yard Sale took place on Saturday, May 3 this year. More than 70 sales were held in and around the Village and the streets were crowded with folks getting some great deals. Various hot dog sales took place giving visitors their first taste of a grilled hot dog for this season. The Middleport Community Yard sale takes place each year on the first Saturday of May and anyone can host a sale on their property. It’s a fun day for shoppers and a great day to “recycle” some things that owners may no longer want or need. Tags: yard sale

The Mayor lit our large Christmas tree on the corner of Park Ave. and Main Street on Sunday, December 1 at 6 PM, and more than 90 folks attended this fun annual event. There was a program of singing by the Middleport Community Choir for both listening and singing along. Christmas cookies and hot cocoa were served after the outdoor lighting in the Universalist Church’s Fellowship Hall which is directly across the street from the Village’s Avenue of Trees. The annual Middleport Holiday Craft Show & Sale took place on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Middleport Fire Hall. It was a great place to pick up Christmas gifts and get some great holiday sales, and attendance was good for this year’s show. There was food served and many guests enjoyed a hot lunch while they were there. Parking was available across the street from the Fire Hall, on Main and State Streets.

Interesting and historical program the Royalton Hartland Community Library A crowd of 45 people were at the library when this family program brought the history of the Erie Canal to life! The Traveling Museum brought artifacts from the mid 1800s through the turn of the century, used on or around the Canal for domestic chores, farming and husbandry, hunting and fishing, shipping and hauling, and daily living with them to explain. The artist who presented the program encourages participants to examine selected items. Attendees learned more about the history and use of the Erie Canal, as well as related vocabulary. Linda Hunter, a quilter with 35 years of experience, discussed the role that quilts have played in the past and in the present at the Royalton Hartland Community Library on Monday, October 21 at 7 p.m. Forty people heard the presentation that was free of charge and took place in the Community Meeting Room, upstairs at the library at 9 Vernon Street in Middleport. Hunter, who is also a quilt appraiser and a member of the American Quilters Society, offered information about different types of quilts, quilting techniques, types of quilt pattern designs and how to best care for your quilt. Christa Lutz, Historian for the Village of Middleport, considers herself lucky, and she hopes her luck will continue. When a local company donated a complete year’s rent for her office at the Masonic Lodge on Main Street, she was so grateful. Now as the year’s worth rent that was donated has been used up, she is hoping she can remain there. “I love having the Main Street location just down from Village Hall,” says Lutz. “People stop in with their items and stories from Middleport’s past. They know I am here and since I am on the ground floor, it’s all handicapped accessible.
