About the Village
A friendly village on the Erie Canal
Middleport is a small village on the eastern edge of Niagara County, New York, straddling the towns of Royalton and Hartland. Home to roughly 1,700 residents and carrying the ZIP code 14105, it grew up alongside the Erie Canal — and the canal still runs right through the middle of town.
Settlers first put down roots here around 1808, when the area was known as “Tea-Pot Hollow.” Everything changed when the Erie Canal reached the community: Middleport became a genuine canal port, a place where boats loaded and unloaded, travelers stopped over, and Main Street filled with shops and trades. The village was officially incorporated in 1872, and much of that 19th-century streetscape survives today.
Life in the Village
A slower, simpler pace
Life is just a tad slower and simpler in Middleport — there is time to be friendly, to enjoy something cold on the front porch and visit with neighbors passing by. The towpath along the north bank of the canal gives residents and visitors a place to walk, jog, cycle and, in winter, cross-country ski. In warmer months the village remains a favorite stop for boaters cruising the New York State Canal System.
Middleport sits in good company, too. It is a few minutes from the wineries of the Niagara Wine Trail, a short drive from the shores of Lake Ontario, and roughly an hour from Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Rochester — close enough for a day trip, far enough to keep its small-town character.
